The 4th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar (May 10th – June 8th) marks Saga Dawa, the month of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinirvana (passing). Buddha’s birth is celebrated on the 7th day of the lunar month (Friday, May 17th). Saga Dawa Düchen is celebrated on the 15th day of the lunar month (May 25th) and is the day of his enlightenment at age thirty-five in Bodhgaya and marks the anniversary of Buddha’s parinirvana. Saga Dawa is therefore a special month of practice for Buddhists worldwide.
Khenpo Sherab Sangpo for the month of Saga Dawa requests that his students refrain from eating meat:
Tomorrow is the first day of what we call million month, the month of Saga Dawa. I’d like to request that people don’t eat meat this month. If you stop eating meat this month, we will have a big prayer ceremony and dedication of the merit for you at my monastery. Please email me your name and how many days that you are not eating meat and we will pray for you. Also, if you can do other virtuous things this month that will be very good. Everything you do will be multiplied 1 million times. We will pray for all the virtuous acts that you do. Thank you very much! – Khenpo Sherab Sangpo
